Almost every Kenyan home pays for internet with M-Pesa. How your billing system handles M-Pesa decides how fast you get paid and how much time your team spends checking payments.
Option 1: through your bank
Customers get an M-Pesa prompt on their phone, enter their PIN, and the money settles into your account through your bank. You do not need a Paybill or Daraja keys, so it is the fastest way to start.
Option 2: your own Paybill
If you already have a Paybill, add your Daraja keys to Purple Router:
- M-Pesa Express (STK push): customers get a prompt from your Paybill and pay with their PIN.
- M-Pesa offline: customers pay from the M-Pesa menu with your Paybill and their account number. Safaricom notifies Purple Router through the API and the payment is matched automatically.
- Money settles straight to your Paybill.
Daraja keys are created on Safaricom's developer portal. Follow Safaricom's current steps there.
Matching and mistakes
Every payment is matched to the right customer and the plan renews by itself. If someone pays to the wrong account or pays too much, the money lands in unallocated payments, where you can assign it or refund it.
Paying with no data
Expired customers on your network get a payment page automatically, and SMS payment links open with no data, so they can pay the moment they notice.
